Welcome to the Refugee Alliance
The Refugee Alliance brings together organisations, community groups, and allies across Aotearoa New Zealand to strengthen refugee resettlement, influence policy change, and uplift the voices of former refugee communities.
Why We Exist
Former refugee communities in Aotearoa New Zealand continue to face systemic barriers including challenges with family reunification and equitable access to housing, health, education, employment, and mental health support. The Refugee Alliance exists to bring together diverse organisations across the motu to advocate for fairer policies, amplify the voices and leadership of former refugees, and build a more inclusive, collaborative, and resilient refugee sector in New Zealand.
What We Do
-

Advocacy and Policy Influence
We advocate for systemic change by engaging with government ministers, officials, political parties, and the sector to address critical issues facing former refugee communities, such as family reunification, equitable access, and resettlement policy.
-

Collaborating to Strengthen the Sector
The Alliance brings together over 40 organisations nationwide to share knowledge, coordinate responses, and build trust across the sector. Through regular hui, working groups, and communication, we strengthen the refugee support ecosystem and foster stronger collaboration, including with smaller, volunteer-led groups across Aotearoa.
-

Leadership and Capacity Building
We strengthen leadership and organisational capacity within former refugee communities through training, workshops, and mentoring. By embedding lived experience in governance and decision-making, we cultivate confident leaders and resilient organisations capable of driving positive, systemic change.
-

Visibility, Voice, and Public Engagement
We amplify refugee stories and issues by engaging with media, hosting public forums, and running social media campaigns, centering lived experiences to shift public narratives.
